Once your friend has a baby for the first time and begins starting their family, their entire life has changed. They’ll have less time to see you, and less time in general for things that aren’t feeding the baby or changing diapers. It can be hard to know how you fit into their new schedule and new life at all. While you might feel a bit out of place, know that everything is far more frantic for them. Fortunately, there are many ways you can support your friend as they go through this major shift.
The most important step you can take towards helping your friend with a new baby is making the offer. Let them know you’re there for them, that they can always rely on you. In the first several months of the baby’s life, you probably won’t see your friend a lot, so just shoot them a quick text message and let them know you’re there if they need you!
If your friend has a newborn at home, the thing they will be most short on is time. After the first several weeks with their new baby, ask if they need anything from you. Offer to cook them dinner, or if they’re comfortable, watch the baby for a few hours. Even just so they can have a nap, or take a much needed shower! You can help with the cooking and cleaning, or ask if they’d like you to run a few errands for them.
Just by asking that question, you’re already well on your way. New moms and dads need support from friends and family now more than ever, so just keep wondering and asking how to help and you’re doing them a huge service. No new parent handles their first baby the same. Some would love any extra help and support they can get, while others may be very protective of their newborn.
Don’t be offended if your friend hesitates about letting you hold the baby, or if you ask to watch them for a little baby. It’s a special new bond that both baby and parent is adjusting to, and it takes time to feel comfortable.
If you’re looking to send new baby gifts to your friend, consider a new baby gift basket. Baskets for new parents can be filled with essential items for their newborn, like onesies and blankets and cuddling plush toys. You can even throw in some essentials for the parents, like soothing candles and delicious chocolate (maybe even a bottle of wine).
